Unsolved Interactive Cases: X-Files Video Games Retrospective
Long before modern story-driven horror games took over the gaming landscape, The X-Files was breaking ground by bringing its eerie, atmospheric universe into the interactive world. From live-action FMV (Full-Motion Video) point-and-click adventures to full-blown survival horror and mobile mysteries, video game adaptations allowed X-Philes to step into the trench coats of FBI investigators.
Here is a look back at five notable X-Files video game releases spanning from the original PlayStation era to modern mobile tie-ins.
The X-Files Game
1. The X-Files Game (1998 – PlayStation 1 & PC)
The ultimate nostalgia trip for late-’90s gamers, The X-Files Game was a seven-disc CD-ROM extravaganza recorded entirely in FMV format.
Rather than playing directly as Mulder or Scully, you take on the role of Field Agent Craig Willmore, tasked with investigating the sudden disappearance of the famous duo in the Pacific Northwest. Filmed during Season 3 of the television series, the game featured original cast performances (including David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Mitch Pileggi, and Steven Williams) and authentic props from the show. Its slow-burn point-and-click mechanics and atmospheric puzzle-solving perfectly captured the show's dark, cinematic mood.
X-Files: Resist Or Serve
2. The X-Files: Resist or Serve (2004 – PlayStation 2)
Taking heavy inspiration from classic Resident Evil and Silent Hill titles, Resist or Serve shifted the franchise into third-person survival horror.
Set during Season 7, the game allowed players to choose between Agent Mulder (focusing on combat and puzzle-solving) and Agent Scully (focusing on autopsy analyses and scientific investigation). With tank controls, limited ammunition, fixed camera angles, and an original musical score by Mark Snow, it stands as one of the most faithful survival horror adaptations of a television series from the PS2 era.
The X-Files: Unrestricted Access
3. The X-Files: Unrestricted Access (1998 – PC/Mac)
Part interactive database, part multimedia game, Unrestricted Access gave fans simulated access to the FBI's secret X-Files network.
Players could navigate through top-secret case files, examine 3D models of alien artifacts, review evidence photos, and watch video clips from seasons 1 through 4. For '90s fans without high-speed internet, this interactive encyclopedia was the ultimate source for deep-dive lore and case research.
4. The X-Files: Deep State (2018 – Mobile)
Fast-forwarding to the series' revival era, Deep State brought the franchise to iOS and Android devices as an episodic hidden-object adventure game.
Set between Seasons 10 and 11, players stepped into the boots of Special Agent Dale, investigating mysterious crime scenes, uncovering clues, and questioning suspects while uncovering a broader global conspiracy. Its comic-book art style and branching dialogue choices brought a fresh, modern entry to the franchise's gaming history.
5. The X-Files (1999 – Pinball / Arcade)
While not a traditional console title, the official The X-Files Pinball Machine (produced by Sega Pinball in 1997) holds a special place in arcade history.
Featuring custom audio clips from David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, a filing cabinet lock mechanism, and glowing alien display elements, it brought the show's creepy aesthetics straight to retro arcades and pinball halls worldwide.
